RIP Cozy
When I was in 8th grade, my sisters and I were greeted by a puppy underneath the tree on Christmas morning. (Or rather, she was assaulted by four girls while trapped in a basket under the tree. Poor thing.) We spent the rest of the morning insisting that she love one of us more than the others and took turns with her sitting on our laps.
I don’t think any of us cared about a single other present that day.
We all had a nerdy obsession with the musical Les Miserables at the time, so she was monikered Cosette. Naturally, we from then on only called her Cozy.
Cozy turned out to be the most loyal, well-behaved, best trained dog we ever had. She was gentle with new pets, kind to old ones, and universally devoted to every member of our family. As she grew older, she lost her hearing, her sight and developed arthritis that made it hard for her to move around, but still enjoyed being pet and touched. And good God, did she love eating.
A few weeks ago my mom took her to the vet and found out she had bladder cancer. We knew she was getting old, but it still hit us hard to hear that she was, essentially, dying. The vet said she wasn’t in pain, but we would know when it was time to let her go. That moment came yesterday, and my heart is a little bit broken.
I hope that everyone who wants a dog gets the opportunity to have one as wonderful as Cozy. She is the perfect example of how pets can enhance our lives.
RIP, lady. We all miss you so much.
